FICCI'S CASCADE CONFERENCE ON 'COMBATING ILLICIT TRADE: INSIGHTS,CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS.

 Ms.Gunjan Krishna,Commissioner for Industrial Development & Director for Industries & Commerce, Govt. of Karnataka whileaddressing the captioned Conference Said,' Smuggling & counterfeiting not only finance terror groups but also undermine global security,posing severe threats to safety & economic growth.The proliferation of counterfiet products,including pharmaceuticals and consumer goods endangers public health & safety,with the WHO reporting that 1 in 10 medicines in low & middle income countries is substandard.In response,Karnataka is taking decisive action by supporting 43 GI tagged products and working closely with law enforcement to combat illicit trade".

Ms.Prabha Rao,Executive Director,South Asian Institute for strategic Affairs & Scholar ,Institute for Defence Studies & Analysis said," To combat  illicit practices,it is crucial to engage grass roots & communities & local leaders,raising awareness about their severe economic,health and societal impacts".

Mr.P.C.Jha,Advisor,FICCI CASCADE,&  Former Chairman,Central Board of Indirect Taxes &  Customs said," It needs to be highlighted that tackling & mitigating counterfeiting & smuggling is essential to achieving $5 Trillion Indian economy as illicit trade & illicit activities pose significant threats to our economic stability & development". Mr.Kotraswamy,M.Commissioner,Bengaluru North CGST  Commissionerate said that there should be collaboration between central agencies,state enforcement bodies,and civil society to successfully tackle this challenge & to safeguard our economy & society.

According to another FICCI CASCADE report titled "Illicit Markets": A threat to our national interests,which examined the impact of illicit trade in five key industries in India Viz: Mobile Phones,FMCG-Houehold & personal goodsFMCG-Packaged Foods,Tobacco Products and alcoholic beverages,the size of illicit market in the above mentioned industries was Rs.2,60,094 crore for the year 2019-20 with the FMCG industry -household & personal goods & packaged goods -together accounting for 3/4th of the total illicit value of goods in five key industries.

STRENGTHENING FIGHT AGAINST GLOBAL CRISIS-AMR. EXPERTS VIEW AT EUROASIA 2024.ANTI MICROBIAL RESISTANCE (AMR) IS A CRITICAL GLOBAL PROBLEM AFFECTING HUMANS

EuroAsia 2024,witnessed participation from leading critical care specialists,experts who shared their concern over Anti Microbial resistance (AMR) & its increasing prevalence .Data suggests that 1.2 million deaths in India are due to anti microbial resistance (AMR),with an estimated  upto 10 million deaths annually by 2050.To effectively address AMR, adoption of a multi faceted approach is crucial.This includes implementation of surveilance & tracking systems,antibiotic stewardship,and infection prevention & control measures.

Addressing the media,Dr.Bharat Jagiasi,General Secretary,ISCCM, said," The resistance to antibiotics is leading to longer hospital stays,longer treament & mortality.There is a need to aggressively strengthen the fight against AMR & adopt One Health Stewardship practices to tackle the global AMR Challenge.Antibiotic resistance has accelerated the spread of resistant bacteria known as "Superbugs" which will put an immense strain on health systems and countries economy,which can result in increased hospitalization & deaths'. 

Dr.Pradeep Bhattacharya,President, Research Committee,ISCCM said," The medical fraternity must exercise caution in prescribing antibiotics to avoid unncessary risks and should adopt a judicious approach through stewardship programs.Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics is a key factor fueling the emergence of resistant bacteria,complicating the treatment of common infections and heightening the likelihood of severe outcomes & death.Apart from this,limited awareness among general public & patients about AMR hinder effective prevention measures". 

Dr.Srinivas Samavedam, President Elect,ISCCM said," The patient needs 36 to 48 hours for any antibiotic to be effective,a little trust is required from the patients. However,the patients take a 2nd opinion and change dosage.Pharmacies are also required to adhere to the norms & putting a red strip on  a medicine means that it should be sold with a prescription."

 Rotary International,is one of the largest  service organisations in the world.The mission of Rotary is to provide service to others.While offering service to the deserving, they conduct a Four Way test Viz':

Rotary Clubs through its various Chapters undertake various projects for the benefit of the community. One such project undertaken by the Rotary Mid Town,Bengaluru is "Early Detection of Cancer" as Cancer is one of the diseases which is affecting large sections of society. ABOUT CANCER : Cancer Cells have gene mutations that turn the normal  cell into a cancer cell.These gene mutations may be inherited,develop over time.Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US.But fewer people are dying of cancer  now than 20 years ago due to early detection & timely treatment.

To create awareness  for early detection of cancer, the Rotary Club of Mid Town,Bengaluru under the leadership of Mr.Abdul Sait _ President & Mr. Uday Kumar K.Bhaskara- District Governor  with their prominent members of the club undertook  trips to Channapatna,Ramnagaram,Mandya,Mysore & Hassan  in Karnataka to conduct meetings of their Chapters.The meetings received good response and their members were too keen to take the message to the comuunity they live in.

Details of the Project :  Normally cancer detection tests cost around Rs.20,000/- in the major hospitals. Mr.Uday Shankar,District Governor said,they had discussions with KARKINOS based
in Cochin to conduct specialised test  & brought down the cost to Rs.3000/-,of which 50% will be borne by the Rotary Club- Mid Town & the balance of 50 % will be borne by different chapters mentioned above to the deserving people.

Cancer Detection Tests to be conducted for Women are: Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer,Colo Rectal Cancer & Oral cancer. For Men : Oral Cancer,Prostate Cancer & Colo  Rectal Cancer. The tests to be conducted are -HPV DNA TEST which has success rate f 96% in early detection.
