Dr.Puneeth Iyengar,M.D.Ph.D, Chief of Lung Radiation Oncology Service, Vice Chair,Strategy & Program Development, & Associate Professor,Dept.of Radiation Oncology,UT South Western Medical Center,Dallas,USA, delivered the Inaugural Lecture of Manorama Iyengar Memorial Distinguished Speaker series on 12th April,2023. The inaugural lecture series was Co-Sponsored by NIAS & the Iyengar Medical Education Foundation (IMEF).The talk was titled " The new advances in Cancer Treatment ". Dr.Puneeth Iyengar has been appointed a Full member & Metastatic Service Chief in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City,USA beginning June 1st,2023.
He started out by suggesting that cancer treatment in India can certainly improve -be it with prevention early detection,use of appropriate therapies for individual cancers, and willingness to be positive and have hope even for the most advanced stages of cancer. He also argued that some of the greatest future advances in cancer can develop in India itself,because of the quality of the clinicians and researchers/scientists,the improving access to the most advanced technologies ,and because of the high volume of cancer patients through which unique knowledge can be gained. What takes some countries many years to finish cancer clinical trials could be done in a few months to years in India due to the number of cancer patients.
Some of the advances Dr.Iyengar mentioned in his talk included the improving imaging of cancers and the ability to detect cancers in the blood stream for earlier cancer identification. Dr.Iyengar,in his hour long talk,focused on Three new treatment Paradigms to treat cancer,Viz: 1.Immuno Therapy, 2.Radiation for Advanced disease & 3.Big Data Enterprises.i.e integration of big data and artificial intelligence to optimize cancer care in a personalized fashion for each and every individual.
Dr.Iyengar also focused on was in the synergistic integration of immuno therapy and other systemic agents with local therapies such as radiation and /or surgery in the management of cancers.
Dr.Iyengar is currently leading one of the largest international efforts,funded by the US National cancer Institute in the form of clinical trial NRG LU 002
to determine if radiation &immuno therapy combined can prolong the lives of stage 4 lung cancer patients who have limited extent of metastatic spread.At the end of his talk, Dr.Iyengar addressed number of questions from the audience,including those regarding the current generation of cancer vaccines,the use of Yoga & Music therapy to improve cancer outcomes.
