UNIFORM CIVIL CODE- IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

 Article 44 of the Constitution,part of the Directive principle of the state policy,provides that the state shall endeavour to secure the citizens an Uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.One Country,One Law,  UCC envisages that having a common Law for all citizens of the country that is not based on religion.Personal Laws related to inheritance,adoption & succession are likely to be covered by a common code.

UCC will ensure equality before law for all citizens in the country promised in article 14 of the constitution Viz :The state shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India.Implementing of UCC can help foster a sense of unity & belonging among  citizens by establishing a common set of laws that transcends religious boundaries.UCC will promote harmonious coexistence of  diverse communities.By harmonizing personal laws,UCC can bridge gaps & reduce divisions based on religion,fostering a cohesive & an inclusive society. The framers of the constitution strongly supported UCC ,as we can observe from article 44.

PROMOTING QUALITY NATIONWIDE- QCI EXTENDS ITS PHYSICAL PRESENCE WITH NABL & NABH BENGALURU OFFICE.

Dr.Puneeth Iyengar,M.D.Ph.D, Chief of Lung Radiation Oncology Service, Vice Chair,Strategy & Program Development, & Associate Professor,Dept.of Radiation Oncology,UT South Western Medical Center,Dallas,USA, delivered the Inaugural Lecture of Manorama Iyengar Memorial Distinguished Speaker series on 12th April,2023. The inaugural lecture series was Co-Sponsored by NIAS & the Iyengar Medical Education Foundation (IMEF).The talk was titled " The new advances in Cancer Treatment ". Dr.Puneeth Iyengar has been appointed a Full member & Metastatic Service Chief in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City,USA beginning June 1st,2023.

He started out by suggesting that cancer treatment  in India can certainly improve -be it with prevention early detection,use of appropriate therapies for individual cancers, and willingness to be positive and have hope even for the most advanced stages of cancer. He also argued that some of the greatest future advances in cancer can develop in India itself,because of the quality of the clinicians and researchers/scientists,the improving access to the most advanced technologies ,and because of the high volume of cancer patients through which unique knowledge can be gained. What takes some countries many years to finish cancer clinical trials could be done in a few months to years in India due to the number of cancer patients.

Some of the advances  Dr.Iyengar mentioned in his talk included the improving imaging of cancers and the ability to detect cancers in the blood stream for earlier cancer identification. Dr.Iyengar,in his hour long talk,focused on Three new treatment Paradigms to treat cancer,Viz: 1.Immuno Therapy, 2.Radiation for Advanced disease & 3.Big Data Enterprises.i.e integration of big data and artificial intelligence to optimize cancer care in a personalized fashion for each and every individual.

Dr.Iyengar also focused on was in the synergistic integration of immuno therapy and other systemic agents with local therapies such as radiation and /or surgery in the management of cancers.

Dr.Iyengar is currently leading one of the largest international efforts,funded by the US National cancer Institute in the form of clinical trial NRG LU 002
to determine if radiation &immuno therapy combined can prolong the lives of stage 4 lung cancer patients who have limited extent of metastatic spread.At the end of his talk, Dr.Iyengar addressed number of questions from the audience,including those regarding the current generation of cancer vaccines,the use of Yoga & Music therapy to improve cancer outcomes.

PROTON BEAM THERAPY,A REVOLUTION IN RADIATION ONCOLOGY,BRINGS A NEW RAY OF HOPE TO CANCER PATIENTS-FIRST TIME IN INDIA.

Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC),South Asia's first & only Proton Therapy Centre ,has successfully treated a 12 year old boy, Venkata Srisaravana Vemula from Bengaluru with Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) for pinealoblastoma- a rare type of cancer that occurs in the pineal gland of the brain. The pineal gland is located in the centre of the brain and it produces a harmone called melatonin,which plays a role in the natural sleep -wake cycle of the human body.

The International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC)  states that there are around 28,000 cases of brain cancer reported in India every year and alarmingly 24,000 people die due to brain tumours  annually. So far, APCC has treated over 300 cases of brain tumours,22 of which are from Bengaluru.

Dr.Srinivas Chilukuri,Consultant, Radiation Oncology,Apollo Proton Cancer Centre,Chennai,said," the boy's tumour was in the pineal gland, a risky location in the centre of the brain,and proton therapy helps deliver highly focused protons,spot by spot and layer by layer, to disrupt the tumour and target radiation to the size and shape of the tumour without harming the surrounding healthy tissues."The protons destroy tumour and hit at the target and can be stopped exactly where they want to stop. There is only one proton Therapy centre is in the country at Chennai.  UK, a small country compared to India has 4 centres.
